Blogging Catch-Up

Okay, so I got WAY behind on our blog lately. It's been a crazy past few weeks. So to catch you up, here's story #1:

One day, we went for a walk around the neighborhood and Jax suddenly went running around the empty lots at top speed with his head in a utility cover tube thingy. It was so funny looking! He just plowed it around without being able to see where he was going. After he quit plowing it, Brice went and looked in it. He was pretty sure there was a small animal in it that Jax was trying to get. Jax hunts field mice. Sure enough, here's what we found down in the tube:
Next we have some new projects we've completed that are pretty cool. A neighbor down the street put in some sod and he had a palate of sod leftover. Since we are the only ones on our block without grass, he gave it to us! Free sod! Yippee! So we laid that sod and then we really wanted to sod the rest of that patch of yard so that the grasses would be the same and so that we wouldn't be wasting water (that set of sprinklers was watering half grass and half dirt). So we got enough sod to finish that portion of the yard. Here's a picture of the sod from our neighbor; I don't have a picture of the whole patch with sod yet, but it looks awesome and it is so much nicer to sit on and play on than dirt! Keeps the house cleaner too.
Our other project was a dog house. With the heat and the rain, I hated bringing muddy dogs in the house, but felt too bad for them to leave them outside without shelter. So we built a dog house. I did the first half myself and Brice helped with the rest. I think it turned out great and the dogs love it! And it wasn't a moment too soon either. We had a temporary addition to our dog pack. He came creeping up the driveway toward Brice one rainy morning and he was drenched and shivering. So Brice brought him up to our room wrapped in a blanket and said, "I brought you something to play with today." He was so cute and cuddly and pitiful!
Here is the cute little stray puppy. He was such a sweet little thing. He was mellow (neither of our dogs are at all mellow! Well, Jax is mellow sometimes when he's in the house sleeping) and cuddly and Raelin just loved him! We walked around the neighborhood looking for his home, but we didn't find it. We put up signs in all the surrounding neighborhoods, but we didn't get any calls for two weeks.
At the end of two weeks, we decided to find him a permanent home. Three dogs was too much for us and he was too sweet to send to the pound. So we gave him to a neighbor family that had expressed an interest. The day after we gave him to them, the owners finally called! Unfortunately, the neighbor family's encounter with the owner kind of confirmed our suspicions that the puppy had been mistreated (he piddled a lot). When the owner went to the neighbors' house to get him, the man called the puppy and the puppy cowered and didn't want to go to him. Poor puppy. We wish we would have taken the signs down as soon as we gave him to the other family. But, what can you do? Just look at that cute little face! How can you not just love him to pieces!?So, the real excitement of late was the fair. The kids went to the fair last year and they loved it and talked about it for a LONG time afterwards. So this year, we really wanted to make a big deal of it for them. We went one evening and the first ride they went on was a roller coaster for kids. In line, Raelin was skeptical and Ryker was excited. Raelin was kinda scared and worried, but Ryker couldn't wait to go! We put them on the ride and went and stood where we could see them. As soon as they came around the first bend, their roles completely changed! Raelin was smiling from ear to ear and waving her hands and Ryker had gritted teeth and big, huge eyes and a terrified look on his face. Oh, it was priceless! I was sad it was too dark for pictures. Every time the kids passed us, Raelin would wave and Ryker was too scared to hear us screaming his name. Finally, about the fourth time around he saw us and finally smiled. When they got off the ride, we asked Ryker what he thought and he said, "Ga-REAT!"
The next morning we went to our friends' house for breakfast and walked a half a block to main street for the parade. The kids loved it! The kids got lots of candy and got to see horses and tractors and all kinds of cool stuff.
The picture above is Ryker running back from the middle of the road with the candy he scored.
We're tight with Ronald McDonald, so he came and said hi to us. He's a funny guy. After the parade, we went back to our friend's house and had a BBQ and a water balloon fight. The kids ran through the sprinklers and had a great time!
Then we went home and took naps for a little while before going back to the fair for dinner with Granddad and some more fun rides. The kids and Brice went on the ferris wheel and they LOVED it!

This is what you get at the end of a day like this one, but their day wasn't over yet! We went up to some friends' house in Alpine because I had to interview an adolescent for my class (this was Saturday night and the paper was due Monday! I was pushing my luck!). While I did the interview, the Rossi's let the kids swim in their pool. They had a great time and we were there swimming and talking (and eating their delicious homemade applesauce) until 10:00 at night! Oh, what a busy day!
(How does she sleep like that!?! We try to lean her against the door all the time, but she always flops back over like this)

Now, backtracking a bit, here are pictures of my cute and funny boys. Random and storyless, but I love Ryker's face and I thought some of you California folks would like to see Brice's long hair. It's longer now and, much to Brice's brother William's chagrin, there seem to be no plans in sight for a haircut!

Backtracking still more, we went up to William and Angel's new house in Deweyville (AKA middle-of-nowhere; most of the people in the bordering town have never heard of it). They have a great new house and we went for a fun and beautiful little hike. We found this pond and the river and a dead river rat. Gross. Don't worry--I didn't take its picture.

One, two, three, WEEEEEE!!!!
Okay, the end! I'll try to keep up better for you in the future, but I do have an excuse. Several, actually, but I'll get to those in another post when I have pictures to go with them. One of them was just that finals were killer! And like I said, I procrastinated my final paper to the literal last minute. I was ten minutes late to class but I finished it! I actually wrote the whole 10 page paper in the morning on the day it was due.

Zoo and other fun stuff

We went to the zoo on one of the few days we had off from school between semesters and it was lots of fun! The kids were pretty excited to go and I don't think they were disappointed.

Isn't this a cool drinking fountain!?
We went to the elephant show and it is amazing what you can teach an animal with just a couple of carrots and really good timing. Raelin's favorite highlight of the zoo was the baby giraffe. We were able to get pretty close to them and the baby was so cute!

Ryker's favorite were the monkeys. Here are my two little monkeys! I'd hoped to catch a monkey in the background of this picture, but no luck.

This tiger was my favorite part of the zoo. Look how huge his mouth is! When we first got to his enclosure, he was prowling around probably wanting his dinner and we got to hear him roar! It was so cool!

Cute, happy kids!

Ryker took this picture! I cropped it a little bit because we were all the way to the right side of the frame, but he got both of us in the picture!
What a happy boy! The kids got to ride the train and play at the cool park and see all the animals. It was a great day. We weren't even out of the parking lot before the kids were completely passed out. Then Brice and I drove up the canyon nearby and did some exploring. It was beautiful up there (except for the piles of snow that were still lingering. I'm so sick of snow!)
Oh, yeah. The funny story of the day was that we were playing at the park and I turned around to find Ryker standing by a tree with his pants halfway down! He's potty training and he doesn't always get that you can't just pee on any tree you see! Luckily, we caught him before he started to go and hurried him off to the bathroom.
We went to campus one day so I could get some work done. We played for a while at the fountain and I tried to get some good pictures, but one of the first things that happened was that Ryker fell off the ledge and smashed his hands and bonked his head. Poor kid. It's the story of his life. And here is our little stud all dressed up for church with wearing Daddy's tie and everything. What a handsome boy! (See, we don't always dress him like a girl!)

My kids crack me up!

This picture is for Aunt Melissa. Raelin is walking in your footsteps!
And this was just great! I was cleaning out my closet to make room for a dresser and Ryker came along in his undies and got a hold of my paint ball gun and put the mask on backwards. Notice the cute pink dress up shoes.
I love his stance in this one!
I had to get a picture of the mask from the back too.
One day we had someone out trying to fix some stuff on our house (we inherited the Somers' curse; even new things break down in this family!) and he left an enormous mud pit in our backyard. The kids went out to play in it and Ryker, true to form, really went for it!

He had a great time getting all muddy and sitting in the puddle.Until...
The kids got COLD!
And my kids have the most sympathetic mommy! Instead of helping my kids out of their wet clothes, I instructed them to take them off themselves while I grabbed my camera! I did run them a hot bath after I got some good pictures though.
Here's my little girly-man. Poor kid was doomed from the start--Both mine and Brice's brothers are all in touch with their feminine side in one way or another. Some of them will probably not appreciate me saying so, but it's true!
Doesn't he make a pretty girl though?
Ryker does have a manly side too. Here are the kids taking on the Daddy-Monster. Ryker's got his "shooter" which is an old holster he puts his hand into and fires away.
Haha! They got that monster!

Week of projects and school

These past two weeks have been pretty busy (Is our life ever not? Is your life ever not?). Last weekend was a wonderful opportunity to hear from our new prophet. "Prophet Hinckley" as our kids call him, passed away and President Monson is our new leader. I miss President Hinckley terribly; he's really the only prophet I've ever known and he was the sweetest, kindest, gentlest, wisest man. Love just exuded from him and it was always a privilege to hear from him. On the other hand, we now have President Monson to lead and guide us and he is an amazing story teller, has a photographic memory (as far as I know), and is clearly inspired and called of God to be His mouthpiece.

Between sessions of conference, Brice put in a garage door opener (YAY!) and I filled our front planter with dirt and flower bulbs (Yay again!). I crocheted a lot during conference and I also did some sewing (you didn't know I could sew, did you! Well, I can, but just barely) in preparation for some bookshelves I've been wanting to make forever. The conference itself was so wonderful. I'd been telling Brice on Friday night before conference about some things I was struggling with with motherhood, and several talks in conference helped to put my mind at ease and make me feel like it was all going to be okay. Ahh, so much better.

All during the week, Brice and I were busy with school--I've had lots of projects due as the semester is coming to a close. We did get to make time for some racquetball, which I love. I'd never played much until recently, which is strange considering how much my dad loves to play it, but it sure is lots of fun, and a good workout!

This weekend I was able to finish my bookshelves! Woohoo! Here they are and I LOVE them! Now I keep the book closet locked and the kids get to have "family library day" and get out a FEW books (not a hundred), so my house won't be so messy! I'm so excited!
And I'm proud to say that I did ALL of it myself (sewing, sawing, painting, and nailing--blogs are for bragging, right?), except for assembling it--too many things to hold for one person to do it alone. And I guess I got a little bit of technical help in figuring out how to find the angles to cut the cross-braces. But it's a good, sturdy, kid-friendly, and hopefully break-resistant piece of furniture.

Brice had some help from our wonderful home teacher and from William (Brice's brother) to get some work done on our fence. Is coming along nicely! I really like Brice's design (he slaved over it for days and days and days and days and days and...you get the idea). Here's what we've got so far and hopefully we'll have an entirely fenced yard really soon and the dogs will no longer be house dogs. At least Pee-Pot-Kira won't be! Haha!
Oh, and my birthday! I forgot. My birthday was on the fourth and I got to go to Barnes & Noble BY MYSELF with a gift card (thanks Mom and Dad!) while Brice made dinner. I also went to Deseret Book and Michael's Crafts (also with a gift card--thanks other Mom and Dad). SO much fun! When I got home, Brice had been SLAVING away (and I do mean "slaving," as you will soon see) in the kitchen just for me. He made me salmon that was fantastic and he'd made Spanish rice from scratch and veggies. It was a great meal, but the best was yet to come. William and Angel and Marcos and Noelle came over for cake. Brice had made an 11 layer chocolate cake that was to die for! It was the most decadent thing ever--a chocolate-lover's paradise! It had two layers of cake, two layers of brownie with chocolate chips in it, two layers of chocolate frosting, two layers of chocolate pudding, a layer of cream cheese chocolate frosting, a layer of chocolate shavings, and a layer of chocolate fudge. Whew! It was delectable! I'm sad I didn't get a picture of it, but there have been numerous requests to repeat the exquisite taste bud titillator, so next time, I'll be sure to document this singular dessert.

The next day, after conference, we went to a park and had a BBQ and played soccer and rolled down an enormous grassy hill. Most of my family was there and it was lots of fun!

Okay, last thing: Here's the picture of William in the tree last Easter that I told you about in a previous post:Can you find him? He's the little brownish dot right between the two trees WAY at the top.

Best dance video ever!

This video is from a while ago, but it's priceless and deserved a spot on the blog. The music is coming from the radio and she is watching her reflection in the TV screen, but it's off.

Isn't that awesome!
